This just hit, and if it means what I think it does, the Supreme Court just opened the door for GITMO here on the mainland. From NPR:
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that immigrants, even those with permanent legal status and asylum seekers, do not have the right to periodic bond hearings.
It's a profound loss for those immigrants appealing what are sometimes indefinite detentions by the government. Many are held for long periods of time — on average, 13 months — after being picked up for things as minor as joyriding. Some are held even longer.
I am all but in tears reading this. Legal residents? People on their way to becoming citizens?
I don’t even have the words.
More, from the Washington Post.

This *may* not be as bad as it initially sounds — see Dara Lind’s tweet about them returning this to the appeals court for a new ruling. Given the current anti-immigrant atmosphere, though, I can’t imagine this will end well at all.
