Donald Trump’s decision that “sometime next week” he will announce tariffs on steel and aluminum is not going over so well with his own party.
"It would be very bad for consumers, it would raise costs for all kinds of products, it would destroy more jobs than it saves in steel, and it would invite retaliation from other countries," Sen.
Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said Thursday.
Earlier in the week, Senate Finance Committee Chairman
Orrin Hatch also criticized the idea of tariffs in remarks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, noting they would be paid by U.S. importers.
"Tariffs are taxes paid by American businesses and American families, and new tariffs would jeopardize some of the opportunities we successfully created through tax reform,” Hatch said.
Orrin Hatch has been one of Trump’s biggest Senate boosters of late, sucking up on an almost Pencian scale … so we’ll have to see if he dares criticize Dear Leader.
Isn’t it fascinating how often Republicans are upset, repulsed, angered, or disappointed by things Trump does—and yet they stick with him anyway?
