There are the moments in your life that mark the passage of years. Today is one of them. As I wrote in a TC diary on this day in 2008:
On Friday March 9 of last year I was readying to leave work when I got a frantic phone call from a friend whose husband crews for a local band. "They cancelled tonite's show. The band is meeting now." A little while later I got another call. "He's dead." The band was Beatlejuice, a talented group of musicians united in their love of the Beatles. The he was Brad Delp, the band's lead vocalist. Oh yeah- he was also frontman for the rock band Boston. Well, f-ck.
Grab your Friday evening beverage of choice, and join me below the fold (after a word from our sponsor that I really hope you’ll take to heart!) for some reminiscing and a little bit of the music I’ve had playing all day...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I’ve done three diaries connected to this topic, back in 2008, 2009 and 2010 (if you’re gonna look back at just one, please read the 2009 diary. I humbly think upon a reread it’s one of the better pieces I’ve ever put up here). I’d written extensively on my connection to Brad back when StreetProphets was still up, but much to my frustration when the site went away I didn’t have backups of any of my work (lesson learned). So let me tell you the “how we met” story referenced in those prior TC diaries, and then leave you with a bit of the music I’ve been listening to today.
When K1 started elementary school she had a friend H, whose Dad was crew chief and photographer for a local Beatles band. He invited us to see the band at an annual benefit show they did at a local high school, and took us backstage to meet the 5-man band between sound check and show start. Introductions were made and for an hour we hung out, chatted, and I distinctly remember sharing the batch of homemade fudgy brownies on the table with everyone, including this kind, gentle, soft-voiced man whose name I didn’t catch.
We went to take our seats right up front, and the band came out. Literally two notes into the first song I’m tugging Mr. Brillig’s arm whispering ”OMG DO YOU KNOW WHO THAT IS?!!!!!!!!”. Mr. Brillig looked at me like I had two heads and said “Yes. Brad Delp. Lead singer for Boston.” Upon which I spent the next several songs considering everything I’d said backstage wondering just how much of an ass I’d made of myself (verdict: not too much).
My music stream today has been all Boston and Beatles. Let me share a bit:
Beatles, as performed by Beatlejuice:
Nowhere Man
A Day In The Life
Hey Bulldog
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
This was the first Beatles tune I remember seeing covered live, at a high school talent show… Penny Lane
Lastly, this version of In My Life, edited by one of the nicest and best sound men around.
But you probably know Brad best for his Boston songs:
More Than A Feeling
A Man I'll Never Be
Rock And Roll Band
Peace Of Mind
Hitch A Ride
and the utterly gorgeous Amanda
I hope you enjoy the music, and heed the message Brad had emblazoned on his guitar strap:
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
May you have love in abundance, always. May you also have Tops in abundance… from nominated Comments, to Mojo, to Pictures. And remember, the Tops you take are equal to the Tops you make.
TOP COMMENTS
Obdisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From Zen Trainer:
In TheLittleOne's diary about how her school board rescinded students permission to join the upcoming March against gun violence (they are threatening expulsion), jmessick (and a few others) commented on how an expulsion for civil disobedience on this important topic will be viewed by the colleges students may be thinking of attending. And this one by keithl who I don't think knew who TLO was, so the comment was very cool.
