Whenever I get a volunteer for a diary, you may have noticed that I tell them their name is on The Board, which conjures up visions of controls and instruments lined up on panels in a brightly lit room. It’s nothing that elaborate, just a text file, to keep track of who is doing what when.
A text file, that opens showing one person’s screen name in particular.

The FP’s for me here is that, despite the fact I can, and should, trim the list and move on, I just can’t bring myself to do it. The tragedy of Adam Miller’s demise is always brought back to me, a talented young man who gave in to the shadows at a low point in his life. It also reminds me of David Smith, known to all as Translator, who also gave in to those shadows. I also think of those regulars like Noor B and KelleyRN, who left our ranks, and I hope are doing well.
I wonder sometimes if I’ll just move on.
I’m sure you have some FP’ers that you miss, too.
And I think these thoughts, and commit them to this article on an old Dell laptop.
There was a time when I’d scoff at a laptop becoming my primary personal computer, and yet, here I am. I have a couple I want to resurrect with new drives and a new operating system, but the halting attempts at getting moved seem to get in the way. Right now I’m typing this in the family room of our new house out in Stephenson County, IL, I have my text file at the ready, and so far so good.
Of course, I’d like to have a new laptop, and wish I could really customize it. I have yet to use the Firewire port, and I wish there were one or two more USB ports, installed on the front edge of the lid, where I could plug my wireless modem without having to use a cable, putting it up where the reception is better. I’m sure you have your own ideas about what constitutes a better laptop. Another of mine is a 17-inch display, since I’m getting old. Share them with us.
And of course, there’s openings on The Board:
