Campaign Action
Amazing stories from today’s National Student Walkout keep surfacing, and Leonardo Aguilar’s tale is no exception. The San Jose, California, second grader was the only one in his class to join the protest today, so his mother walked him down the street to nearby Lincoln High School. Once there, he joined the big kids in their stand against gun violence, wearing a homemade sign declaring that “Guns are cruel, not cool.”
Amen, little brother.
In an interview with CBS 5/KPIX, Leonardo explained why he took a stand.
“I’m protesting for the Florida shooting. I made a poster — as you can see — and I came here,” he said when (asked) about participating in the protest.
When asked why he felt so strongly, the second grader replied, “Because guns are not safe and people get hurt. And teenagers shouldn’t bring guns to school.”
When he was asked if he felt safe at school, Leonardo shook his head and said, “No.”
Leonardo was just one of thousands of Bay Area children and young adults to protest today.
