Happy Friday! This week has been calmer than last week. School work has gotten done. Bit has started Driver’s Ed through Florida Virtual School, mostly because that way she has the drug and alcohol course covered for free, and she gets the certificate for an insurance deduction. I also think being exposed to a teacher other than Mom or Dad before she starts college is a good thing. She sometimes disagrees, but this lady seems nice. She’s supposed to do 1-2 assignments per week, she’s done 3 this week, and currently has an A (93.33%) so yeah, I’m not too worried about it.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

I didn’t get my driving permit until I was 18, and I was taught to drive by my husband at the time’s grandfather. It was interesting because this was the abusive ass of a husband and he sat in the back seat for most of it, and every time he opened his mouth to criticize me, his grandfather reached over the seat and bopped him on the head, so he quickly learned to keep his mouth shut. Of course that didn’t stop him from saying anything later, but, I got a good snicker out of it at the time.
Now I can’t drive, because of seizures, and we don’t have the money to support a car, so even though Caedy can drive (my other half can’t because he’s legally blind, and Draco *won’t*) we don’t have a car. So Bit is going to spend time at her Aunt’s house over the summer, and my Mom’s house and learn from them, and she’s going to learn from the friend of ours she babysits for and his wife. And we’ll work out enough hours and practice for her to get her license next summer.
The rules sure have changed since I was learning. We didn’t have to take a drug and alcohol class to get our permit, and, if you’re under 18 in Florida, you have to have your permit for a full year before you can take your driving test. None of that applied when I was a kid. But by the time she’s done with this course she should be ready and able to pass her learner’s permit test.
She wanted to get a part time job over the summer and start saving for college and a car. Somewhere close, like Hardees, where she wouldn’t have to cross any major streets, and it’s across the street from where Caedy is working and they’d be able to walk home together in the evenings. But, the only place in town that will hire you at 15 is McDonald’s and a) she doesn’t want to work there (because she’s heard too many stories from Caedy) and b) she says it’s too far to walk on her own, especially at night in the dark (and I agree), so she’s going to have to wait until next year to start working and saving up, unless she can get a paying babysitting gig this year. We’re putting feelers out. Caedy may know some people.
At 16 most places in the area will hire her part time, so next year at least she should be able to find
something. She wants to work at Starbucks and dual enroll in college through a program they have, but she’ll need a car, because that’s too far to walk every day, and it’s along a major highway and she’s not comfortable biking there. So she’s planning on working somewhere close long enough to save up for a car, then start at Starbucks after that, and hopefully get the bulk of her general courses out of the way and/or get an AS degree around the same time as graduating high school, so she can enroll in a larger college after that to get the degree and career she wants.
Yes, she has a plan, and we’re working towards that plan, with our course choices and budgeting and everything else. She’s a smart cookie, and I really think she can follow through and go places. I’m very proud of her, can you tell?
