Every time I see Alan Dershowitz on the news or read something he wrote, I think 1). This guy is losing his mind, or 2). He wants a job on Trump’s defense team.
The latest nonsense was his op-ed in the Hill, where he seemed to be desperately trying to get Trump’s attention:
President Trump is right in saying that a special counsel should never have been appointed to investigate the so-called Russian connection. There was no evidence of any crime committed by the Trump administration.
“So-called Russian connection?” And “No evidence of any crime committed by the Trump Administration?” Maybe Dershowitz should review the order authorizing the Special Counsel. It reads in part:
The Special Counsel is authorized to conduct the investigation confirmed by then-FBI
Director James B. Comey in testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on March 20, 2017, including:
(i) any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals
associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump; and
(ii) any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation
The order doesn’t mention the Trump Administration. It mentions “individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump.” And we know there were numerous contacts between Trump campaign personnel and Russia, and many of those people then lied, repeatedly, about those contacts.
That seems highly suspicious. It certainly warrants an investigation.
Later, Dershowitz adds:
The vice of a special counsel is that he is supposed to find crimes, and if he comes up empty-handed, after spending lots of taxpayer money, then he is deemed a failure. If he can’t charge the designated target — in this case, the president — he must at least charge some of those close to the target, even if it is for crimes unrelated to the special counsel’s core mandate.
Now I may not be a Harvard Law School professor, but I do know when someone is trying to pull a fast one. Again, the president wasn’t the designated target. That doesn’t mean that the evidence won’t lead to him, but I don’t think this investigation was started with the purpose of bringing down Trump.
Of course, Trump isn’t exactly behaving like an innocent man at this point. So he may now know for certain he is in Mueller's crosshairs, but that's just because that's where the evidence led.
But Dershowitz is simply making things up and misleading people. He isn’t stupid, so the only thing I can conclude is that he is looking for a job.
