I’d like to take a few moments to share with you what I have learned from being a family doctor. During my training, I learned how to think analytically. I learned the difference between a fact and an alternative fact. But, more importantly,
I have learned through 31 years of practicing medicine that if you don’t dose your facts with compassion, they aren’t well absorbed.
Now I’d like to share with you what I have learned from being a candidate, since this is my second campaign. Good candidates have the same qualities as good doctors. They combine rational thinking with active listening. A good doctor keeps up with the latest medical research but renders care with empathy. A good candidate studies the issues but never forgets that public service is ultimately about people.
Finally I’d like to share what I have learned from my husband, who spent 40 years as the principle percussionist of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. For the layman, that means he was head drummer! I’ve learned what it’s like to be unconditionally loved. But he has also taught me the importance of timing, of rhythm.
I started marching to the beat of a different drum as soon as the election ended in 2016. I worked on gerrymandering. I ran for Congress. And now I’m running for State Senate.
This is the time for the left to rise and answer the indignities that have been brought by the present administration. This is the time for people who know how to meld compassion with science to rise and remove the blind loyalists who continue to prop-up the unprincipled.
I am happy to be joined by an unprecedented number of qualified women candidates and fellow physicians and people of science. I just received news today that 314 Action has chosen to endorse my present campaign, as they did my last one. 314 Action helps people with STEM or other scientific backgrounds run for office.
Please continue to support candidates who reflect your values.
