Donald Trump’s usual tactics are failing him in the case of Stormy Daniels vs Donald Trump.
Trump seems to have an air of invincibility about him with regard to scandal. Any number of things he has done and said would have ended any other politician’s career summarily. Christianists and evangelicals have accepted and forgiven all of his wrongdoing.
Marco Rubio lowered himself in the primaries to try and fight Trump on his own level, making suggestive remarks about Trump’s penis size (gagggg!!!!) and it backfired on him.
Trump has remained uncharacteristically silent about his alleged affair with the porn star. Not a single tweet from the prolific tweeter. According to conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg from conservative National Review:
How many times have we heard that Trump is a “counter-puncher,” employing the verbal equivalent of the “Chicago Way”? If you insult him a little, he’ll insult you ten times worse. If you tell the truth about him, he’ll say you’re lying. If you say that you’d have beaten him up in high school, he’ll say he’d beat you up now — and that you’re mentally weak and a crybaby. He’s like the Mole Man. Whatever low road someone else takes, he’ll dig out an even lower road.
This tactic, learned at the feet of Roy Cohn and honed over decades of tabloid-war juvenilia and shady business dealings, served him well in the Republican primaries. No one wanted to attack Trump because they knew he’d counter-attack viciously and, again, shamelessly. It’s a bully’s tactic we all encountered in high school (unless, of course, you were one of the bullies). It’s much like the old adage about not wrestling with pigs — you’ll get dirty and the pig likes it. Voters priced the piggishness into Trump’s persona, but they punished normal politicians who resorted to the same tactics.
In other words, in almost a Nietzschean fashion, Trump uses the decency of others against them.
That’s what’s so fascinating about Stormy Daniels. What on earth can Donald Trump say about the star of Breast Friends 2 and Finally Legal 7? How can he embarrass her?

So Stormy Daniels may prove to be the adversary that can bring him down. I know that there are people who think paying attention to this subject is beneath us and far less significant than the Russia collusion and Mueller’s investigation. It is. But it has served dual purposes: in a way her interview on 60 Minutes has educated the rest of America (that doesn’t spend hours on the internet) to his disgusting proclivities and lying amoral character. As well, it is a distraction — for Trump and his team — from the Mueller investigation. It gives Robert Mueller the needed space to work on it, without Trump interfering.
