Happy Friday!!! It’s been a twitchy week with a lot of brain fog, but at least I’ve not been sick like last week, right?? Bit didn’t catch the stomach bug, she was the only one who didn’t. I don’t know how she managed it when she also ended up being the one taking care of everyone.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

So we’ve been studying the old west and the settlement of the old west. A big part of this week was the Oregon Trail, so I found the game, online.. for free.. for Bit to play (follow the link in the name to play). Now this is a game that used to be played in public schools as an educational game, and it’s fun so I wanted to be sure to include it.
However, this is what happens when you let a couple of Browncoats (Firefly fans) play Oregon Trail…
First was the discussion of names…
Dad: “Who do you want to run the wagons?”
Bit: “Malcolm Reynolds, of course!”
Dad: “Ok, wife’s name...”
Bit: <snickers> Jayne.. we’ll make Jayne be the wife….
Dad: “Ok, these two?”
Bit: “Well this one is Wash, so that one must be Zoe… “
Dad: “Ok, one last one, the kid...”
Bit: “Well can’t be Inara because that would be creepy. Can’t be River because we don’t have Simon… so must be….”
Dad and Bit together: “Kaylee!”
So we had an entire Oregon Trail adventure a la Firefly…
Jayne and Kaylee drowned in the river. Bit said that Wash pushed Jayne off the wagon because Jayne was trying to lighten the load by throwing food overboard, and Kaylee being Kaylee, she tried to jump in and save Jayne and ended up drowning them both.
Zoe died of dysentery.
Walsh got the measles (twice), broke his leg, and had other minor injuries and ailments, but he and Mal did finally make it to the end of the game.
Whereupon my daughter said…
”This is a fertile land and we will thrive!…… and we shall call it… ‘This Land’.”
And her Dad said…
“I think we should call it your grave!”
Bit: “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!”
Today they plan to play Oregon Trail again… I wonder if it’s going to be another Brownshirt episode or if they’re going to go somewhere else this time, maybe Star Trek or Star Wars…. or even Marvel or DC? Yes, yes, we ARE a house of Nerds…
Ah, adventures in Homeschooling… with the Browncoats… how fun!
