17 years ago, Nick Burchill managed to get himself banned from the most prestigious hotel in Victoria, BC...The Empress Hotel that sits smack dab at the end of the Inner Harbour. It’s a beautiful old hotel. Recently, he decided to see if he could reverse that banning...which has resulted in a story that has everyone rolling on the floor with laughter:
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Anyhoo...17 years ago, Nick had the opportunity through work to be coming to BC from Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a conference and brought with him many packages ( in fact, and entire suitcase full ) of Brother’s Pepperoni to give to old Navy buddies. The lucky sod’s hotel room was at the Empress. Unfortunately, his suitcase full of pepperoni was delayed by the airline for 24 hours, and by the time he retrieved it, the meats were getting a bit smelly so he laid out the pepperoni on a table in front of a window and opened the window to keep the treat cool. His room was a four floors up, so no worries about the treats getting stolen. At some point he left the room and returned a few hours later.
He opened to door to complete mayhem. Some 40 or more seagulls were IN THE ROOM, busy helping themselves to a feast of pepperoni. Nick startled them when he entered the room and they all started flying around, knocking into things, trying to find a way out other than the small opening in the window. There result was a whirlwind of feathers, chewed-up pepperoni, bird shit and freaked out birds.
Nick managed to open several other windows and most of the birds left, except for one. But another enterprising seagull wanted just one more piece of pepperoni, so tried to duck back into the room. Nick threw a shoe at it...both the bird and the shoe flew out the window. He was then left with just the one large bird which wouldn’t leave. He chased it around and finally managed to throw a towel over the bird and threw it ( still wrapped in the towel) out the window.
Now he had a huge mess to deal with. He tried...he really did...to clean up. He ran downstairs to get his shoe and washed it (it was covered in mud) and then tried to dry it with the hairdryer. Then the phone rang. He answered it...leaving the hairdryer on. A minute later all the power went off. The hairdryer had vibrated itself into a sink full of water, shorting the electricity in the room!!!
He gave up trying to deal with it by himself and phoned the front desk asking for help. A cleaning lady showed up and Nick ran...to dinner. Leaving that poor lady to have to clean the terrible mess!! The hotel did put him in another room for the night.
He found out days later that the hotel had written his boss, stating that they were banning him from the hotel for his lifetime. Apparently he had managed to hit some guests on their heads when he tossed his shoe and a towel wrapped gull out the window.
