Things continue to worsen by the day in Puerto Rico. Seven months after Hurricane Maria, the island continues to struggle with power grid and infrastructure issues. Even though power had been restored in many homes and businesses, this catastrophe marks the second largest blackout in world history.
And on Wednesday, yet another island-wide blackout occurred, leaving a struggling population even more desperate than before.
It is no surprise that this keeps happening again and again. After all, the media seems to have forgotten this story entirely while the federal government has completely abandoned its responsibility to the people of the island. Moreover, millions of dollars are being awarded to contractors who are supposed to provide disaster relief and rebuild and there is zero accountability or transparency.
At this point, repairing anything on the island to its pre-hurricane condition is not an option. Local, federal government and private businesses must commit substantial resources and effort to completely rebuilding the island and to eliminating its massive debt. This is unacceptable and should not be happening. We should all be demanding answers as to why our government continues to ignore this crisis and go out of its way to make life far worse for Americans in Puerto Rico.
