Polls closed at 10 PM ET in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, where Republican Debbie Lesko faces Democrat Hiral Tiperneni in a special election for the final months of former Republican Rep. Trent Franks’ term. This district, located in the western suburbs of Phoenix, backed Trump by a 58-37 margin (and Romney by 62-37 in 2012), so it’s very conservative turf. Most observers are not expecting the GOP to lose this seat but are watching the final margin closely to see if Democrats can move the needle in unfriendly territory.
David Jarman has put together a guide to this unusual district, which by and large didn’t exist as such 40 years ago. Johnny Longtorso has also written up summaries for the 11 legislative special elections that are also taking place in New York tonight, where polls closed at 9 PM ET.
Note that Arizona’s Secretary of State says that first results, which will only consist of early votes, are not expected until 11 PM ET. Election Day results from polling places are not expected until midnight or later.

With over 150,000 early votes now counted, Republican Debbie Lesko leads Democrat Hiral Tiperneni by a 53-47 margin. That’s an incredibly weak spread for a deeply conservative seat like this, but it may well be enough to secure victory for the GOP.
