I wasn’t sure what I was going to write about, primarily because I leave Thursday dark o’clock for my annual trip to see friends old, new and as-yet-unmet in a hotel conference room while enjoying three days of music-making and merriment, and my brain has switched into PREPARE TO TRAVEL mode. As is so often the case a topic presented itself. Mr. Brillig and I were eating dinner and while reading a news article I saw a word new to me. Grab yourself a glass of something delicious and join me below the story break after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I was reading the latest updates in the Toronto tragedy when I came across a word I didn’t know- INCEL. I asked Mr. Brillig if he knew what it was, and he stared at me as if I’d crawled out from under a news-and-pop-culture rock. “You haven’t heard that?” So in case any of YOU have been sharing sub-rock locations with me, Incel means “Involuntary Celibate”. Or in terms people here understand, a guy upset that women won’t sleep with him so he bands together online w other people not getting laid and blames the sexually prolific “Chads” and the picky unwelcoming “Beckys” instead of his own sorryass attitudes.
I hope that wasn’t too judgy. #sorrynotsorry
Then Mr. Brillig said “You DO know what a Sovereign Citizen is, right?” and I had to admit that while I thought I did, clearly my rock was a very, very good rock at keeping me from cultural literacy (or it could be I’m still walking on air because in prep for my heading off to Jam, we dyed my hair bright blue this weekend, but who knows? :-)). I assume I am the last person at dKos to know this term since it was all over the news after this weekend’s Waffle House murders, but in case I’m not the sovereign citizen movement believes the government is illegitimate and it seems mostly to boil down into refusal to pay taxes.
So my question tonight is: What other words, terms, or other similar vocabulary is out there that not everyone understands?
Thinking back over recent months, I’ve had a couple of moments where I used a term that I thought was universally understood, only ton find out that someone was unaware. I casually dropped “gender nonbinary” into a conversation with a friend and got “huh? Is that having both sets of sex organs?” Erm, no, it’s (at least as I understand it) not identifying for any reason as either male or female. I’ve also explained what “cis” is in the context of gender identity, etc. What current words are new to you, or have you described to people in the constant struggle to keep people culturally literate?
One person who needs no explaining or description is BeninSC. He IS universally known as being one of the best people around, so please show him the love tonight since he’s collaborating with me to bring you tonight’s Top comments, Mojo and Pictures!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
