This story is new to me but perhaps not new to all of you. It happened last year but I just came across it today and — whoo boy! — did I ever tear up. Maybe it’s because I recently lost one of my beloved dogs and she happened to share a trait with this puppy, deafness. But I’m pretty sure it’s way more than just my personal experience.
I challenge you to get through the 1 minute and 18 seconds of this video about a blind and deaf puppy and still have dry eyes. No matter how tough you think you are, I’m advising you to have those tissues at hand!
Piglet’s deafness and blindness are the result of breeding gone awry. Someone tried to breed two dachshunds with a particular coat pattern but that often means one or more pups will be born with defects of hearing or vision or both.
Here’s another clip from before Piglet found his forever home, if you haven’t bawled enough yet.
And, finally, here’s the 22 minutes long version of Piglet’s story. It has some heartbreak about Piglet’s origins, including that his mother rejected him … but it has a lot of heartwarming too, as Piglet finds love and happiness in a new home and learns to socialize with his humans and his doggy foster siblings.
Piglet’s forever-mom is a veterinarian and has a website and charitable organization in Piglet’s name. The donations and profits they get from merchandise sales go to rescue organizations around the U.S., including those that work with special needs dogs.
