The seriously ailing Senator John McCain has admitted that George W. Bush’s war in Iraq was a serious mistake and that he himself shared much of the blame.
In his new memoir, McCain who is battling brain cancer, writes that the Iraq War “can’t be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it,” as Politico reports.
McCain defended the war long after the public soured on the conflict that originally was to eliminate Weapons of Mass Destruction and then transitioned into bringing democracy to Iraq. The weapons turned out to be a fantasy and a strong, functioning democracy has been difficult in Iraq. Sectarian conflicts between Sunni and Shia Moslems help give rise to ISIS which took over about 40% of Iraq, including its second largest city, Mosul.
Nonetheless, McCain defended the war that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, appearing on countless Sunday talk shows as one of the chief hawks in the Senate, suggesting that the US continue the conflict for decades, just as US troops have remained in Europe 70 years after WW II.
Apparently, he decided to tell the truth. Maybe, he wants to be forgiven.
