I had been a fairly regular smoker - almost a pack a day - until I finally quit about three years ago. Even now, however, I will still occasionally sneak a cigarette. I am in good company — President Obama is an ex-smoker who every once in a while will sneak one. Yeah, so that makes me cool. 😎
But what I want to talk about today, is how to not get caught after sneaking a butt. Your entire body will reek of tobacco after a single smoke, but certain parts of your body have it worse than others. The two areas you want to clean thoroughly after a cig are 1) your mouth and 2) the hand you used to hold the cigarette.
In an ideal setting, you will have a moment to excuse yourself to a rest room. There, you should immediately wash your hands with soap and water, and you’ll be halfway home. As for the mouth, if you can brush your teeth with toothpaste, that’s perfect. But don’t forget to also brush your tongue a bit. The hand wash/tooth brush combo is really a best-case scenario.
But chances are good that after your secret cigarette, you won’t be near a bathroom, and you’ll be even further away from toothpaste. If you have a mint or a piece of gum, take it as soon as possible. If you only have a beverage, be it soda, iced tea, orange juice, or even just water, take a big sip, swish it around in your mouth for a bit, and then take small, sequential swallows of it, to wash away the smokiness.
As for your hand, there’s not much you can do, except keep it in your pocket. That will not only hide the smell, but the mere act of rubbing your hand against the material inside your pocket, will, to some degree, rub off the smoky smell.
