As I write this tome, I am in Tulsa on a business trip. If all goes well, I will be home at CUA time Wednesday morning. With thunderstorms predicted at either end of the flight, things could change.
Once upon a time, it was fun to get into a plane and travel to exotic places like Tulsa. I recall a few times when I was running late, and I sprinted from the parking lot and through the airport, all the way to the gate. I never missed an originating flight (although I’ve missed a few connections).
These days, punctuality is a must. If you press your luck, you can easily find yourself staring at an endless security line, the front of which you will not see until long after your flight has taken off. Instead, you must arrive ridiculously early, and end up waiting one place or another.
My outbound flight was 10:50 Friday morning. I had to be on the 7:00 shuttle (70 mile ride), in case traffic was bad, or the security line was long. I ended up being at the gate more than an hour early, which is certainly better than missing a flight.
Oh, and when I reserved my flight online, I discovered that I could not choose my seat any more, unless I paid an extra $50 or so for the flight. I went ahead and paid that, plus another $50 for comfort class. Extra fees here, extra fees there, and eventually you’re looking at real money.
How about you? Do you fly on commercial airlines very often? Love it, or hate it? What is your favorite method of transportation? As per usual, this is an open thread.
