It is June, also known as Pride Month! Flags abound, parades are plentiful, and there are parties and dances in abundance. And with all that celebrating and joyful presence of the tribe to which I name myself a part comes… MUSIC! Now, because I am a boring suburban parent who doesn’t get out socially I can’t tell you what’s currently popular on the LGBTQ party circuit, but I CAN compile a great set of music by out and proud musicians, so don your Pride wear, grab something bubbly, and join me below the Story Break after a word from our sponsor (and, truth be told, the reason we’re here and why we need each and every one of YOU to help us continue this diary series!)…
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Before I get to the music, please take a moment to remember the 49 people killed and 58 wounded two years ago tonight in the Pulse nightclub mass shooting.
A huge shoutout to my music Muses today, thatkid aka K1, and Just One More Dad, who combined have forgotten more music than I will ever know! While I included some old-school favorites for we old-school Kossacks, there’s a plethora of new music and I left off some of the icons of the group, such as David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Happy to have them in the comments, along with YOUR contributions to this list!
- Closer To Fine — Indigo Girls — One of my all-time favorite songs by my #1 female duo, this particular version features another of my most-loved singers, Matt Nathanson.
- Gravel To Tempo — Hayley Kiyoko — From wikipedia: “Through her music, Kiyoko works to normalize lesbian relationships in a society and music industry that she sees as being very heteronormative.”
- Yes I Am — Melissa Etheridge — This may not be one of her most well-known songs, but it’s one of my favorites.
- Pynk — Janelle Monáe — I hadn’t heard this song until K1 said “you gotta watch this!” and she was absolutely right.
- Secrets — Mary Lambert — So many excellent songs to choose from, but this one just resonates with me.
- Black Me Out — Against Me! — Often missing from lists of out LGBTQ musicians is, well… the T musicians. This punk band is fronted by transgender female Laura Grace and is well worth a listen!
- Funnel Cake & Lemonade — Sean Kagalis — I’ve known Sean online since 2010 and had the pleasure of meeting him in 2017; this song is his ode to how he met his husband. If you’d check out Sean’s music it would do my jaded progressive heart good :).
Please give a grateful thank you to BeninSC tonight, for handling the formatting tonight so I could single parent and NOT lose my composure at K2, who is as we speak finishing a school project he SWORE was complete yesterday. A fragile, lego-based project that *must be transported to school tomorrow*.
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
