On Sunday, June 17, 2018, the Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen tweeted this out.
Campaign Action
It was a remarkable thing to say because it was a lie. The statement was the literal opposite of the facts both in the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” direction to ICE as well as its clear misrepresentation of what our eyes and ears have seen and heard the past few days, and weeks. Then Monday, June 18, Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen had this to say in front of a National Sheriff’s group meeting down in New Orleans.
Nielsen: To be honest, there are some that would like us to look the other way when we are dealing with families down by the border; and not enforce the law, passed by Congress. Including, unfortunately, some members of Congress. Past administrations have done so but we will not. We do not have the luxury of pretending that all individuals coming to this country as a family unit are in fact a family. We have to do our job. We will not apologize for doing for our job. We have sworn to do this job.
