Meet Carl and Kim. They are two likely very nice people working for Passport Services at the US Department of State, and whose only mistake today was that they got out of bed this morning and went to work. However, whomever told them that today would be an AWESOME DAY to do a Facebook live Q&A about “Family Travel Hacks” probably deserves to be hung by their thumbs and beaten with a pogo stick. (h/t to Aaron Sorkin for that reference, btw)
The complete and utter tone deafness of holding such an event while families are currently being ripped apart just for applying for asylum in the US, or having surrendered to CBP officers at the border is frankly just unconscionable. Apparently, quite a few folks on the internet thought so, too.
The FB comments range from dark snark to downright brutal:
This is why messaging matters, folks. Trotting out this kind of seemingly innocuous event at this particular moment is pretty unforgivable, particularly since it’s been building for a few weeks now. The internets will inevitably not let you forget it.
