Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah wants America to think the 60-vote filibuster still exists for Supreme Court picks. According to Hatch’s declaration on Fox News, any confirmation trouble Donald Trump's pick might encounter will be the fault of obstructionist Democrats' imposing a filibuster.
Good news, Hatch! Not only can Democrats not “afford” to do it, they can’t do it. You helped Majority Leader Mitch McConnell nuke the filibuster for Supreme Court picks last year in a 52-48 party-line vote that YOU voted for! Remember when you wrote that whole TIME op-ed whining that you were "not happy" Democrats had forced Republicans to change override the rule because Neil Gorsuch was too extreme a jurist to get confirmed without overruling the filibuster? Maybe you’re confused because you were vehemently against nuking the filibuster before you were for it.
In the same Fox interview, Hatch also advocated for Trump to pick Amy Coney Barrett, perhaps the most extreme and least qualified of his options. Hatch did that because he knows Democrats can’t filibuster. If they could, Barrett would be Dead On Arrival. Gotta give Hatch credit—he’s nothing if not an epic poser.
