My uncle managed a grain elevator on the Mississippi River. He bought grain from farmers and inland elevators. The grain was loaded on barges and shipped downriver to the Gulf. Every year the Upper Mississippi freezes over. Climate change has made it less certain. The river and the elevator were quiet during the frozen winter. He worked there all his life and had spent many days beside the frozen river. Once a year at no predictable time the ice would crack. The entire river gave off an eerie sound. It did not immediately break into ice floes. It didn’t look much different; it was still a frozen river. The cracking indicated the beginning of a flowing river eventually to return. It was a phenomenon that you had to be there to hear, and once it was over everything would be much the same. Today in our national politics the ice cracked.
Next week will not seem much different, the GOP will still try to jam through a SCOTUS nominee. I have heard they hope to pass another tax scam bill, and Trump will still be president. Today what has been obvious to anyone who cared to be objective has cracked the GOP cult of delusion. It has been very disturbing that we are divided into partisan fact camps. A president who has high personal morality is no longer a priority with the GOP. Formerly strong supporters of the FBI and CIA, now the same Republicans express doubts. Free trade a bulwark of GOP policy, now ignored. NATO and other alliances with allies instead of being strongly supported are questioned by the Trump base. No matter what outrage Trump committed the GOP remained silent always expressed complete support. It has been amazing; they even deny Trump ever lies. Tomorrow won’t be much different; they will continue to say Kelly really should have been offered biscuits and gravy not cheese and pastry. They will claim Trump’s rambling rants insulting every ally in Europe are not a problem. They will say all leaders love his blunt style. They will continue to shill, but something cracked today.
A nordic spirit brought a tremor that went through the body politic today
The cracks could be seen and heard from Fox News to the GOP lackeys not defending our bloated POTUS today. Throughout the country today anyone paying attention, the majority of Trumpers did not pay attention, were shaken. We all witnessed a president not defending the constitution. President Trump was not putting America’s interests first, he was exhibiting anything other than a sacred honor. This is nothing new. We who have always been appalled by Trump have called him a fraud, corrupt, a traitor, a bully, a dope. Well, we have gone on and on. It had no effect. No matter the behavior it was OK, because Trump was somehow their golden idol. Today people still shaken from his Lampoon of a European Summer Vacation saw a man who behaved as if, he were an agent of a foreign power. A withered hulk of a man. A man who in no way deserved the dignity and power once embodied by the President of the United States. There is a science fiction book I once read by Robert Heinlein, I think. A man is offered a place out of kindness at an important assemblage who is then identified as the President of the United States. The narrative explains how it was once a position that commanded great power and respect. This is where we are today to anyone who still cares about America at all, our president is undeniably unfit and powerless.
The river is still frozen, and it is many weeks until spring. Once the river is flowing; barge traffic will be moving again. DC doesn’t have good grains to export, but there are huge piles of fetid garbage to ship out. The clean-up can and must begin in November; vote for no Republican for any office. After we’ve turned the firehoses to clean up the offices of government we can begin to fix the finer points of policy making in coming elections. We must save our country. There are two parties now, one of patriots and one of traitors. I will only stand with patriots, the Trumpers have chosen the side of traitors. Even the few Republicans who dare mumble a complaint about Trump support every destructive policy the GOP promote. If we do not win this political war, we will not have a democracy. We will not have a livable environment. We will not have a viable economy. We will no longer be Americans, as we have known ourselves.
