Since Trump is throwing the country under the bus in virtually all of its international relationships, and his party is visibly unable to do the first thing about it, there is one group of people who should be quitting: our Ambassadors. Two have already: James Melville, our Ambassador to Estonia, and James Feeley, our Ambassador to Panama. Right now, these are outliers. Since Trump just dissed the entire European Union, promoted Russia, sidelined South Korea and Japan, went after Canada and Mexico — all of that in the last month — the Ambassadors to all of those countries have been forced to defend indefensible positions to the countries where they represent us.
High on my list: Jon Huntsman, our Ambassador to Russia; Kelly Knight Craft, Canada; Woody Johnson, United Kingdom; Jamie McCourt, France; Kay Bailey Hutchison, NATO; Nathan Sales, Ambassador-at Large, Counterterrorism. Of that group, I have no illusions about their respective consciences; I’m good, however, with shaming them over their enabling the most craven foreign policy in our history. Oh, and forget about our Ambassador to the European Union: Gordon Sondland, who of course is a hotelier, was just confirmed last month, as was Harry Harris for South Korea.
Dear Ambassadors: Quit. Here’s sample text for you:
In light of recent developments, I no longer believe I can provide credible representation of the country I love. I, therefore, hereby resign my position, effective immediately.
Edit: The Salt Lake Tribune has carried an editorial telling Jon Huntsman to resign:
This has to be the last straw. To remain silent and continue to serve this president would be complicity in the undoing of our nation and its status as a world leader.
Come home, Mr. Huntsman. Your country needs you.
Huntsman’s brother owns the paper.
