First, I want to direct your attention to the image. It shows an American president who is unafraid and ready to engage the smirking Putin, an authoritarian murderer and enemy of the American people. This is an American president who you know has America’s best interest at heart.
Fast forward a couple of years.
Obama went in on Trump during his speech in South Africa. He didn’t directly mention Trump directly by name, but this quote accurately describes our current “president” and his current handler. Per Politico:
He went on, “We see the utter loss of shame of political leaders when they're caught in a lie, and they just double down and lie some more. Politicians have always lied, but it used to be that if you caught them lying, they’d be like, “Aw man.’ Now they just keep on lying.”
Obama also said that we are existing in a time of great peril and that we have a choice to make. We either fight for a world that is more liberal and tolerant, or we allow authoritarians and tyrants to usher in a world steeped in fear, corruption, and hatred. Obama is optimistic that we will continue to rise up and defeat the new onslaught of authoritarian regimes. I think we can too. Despite what we see in the news, the world is becoming younger, more diverse, and more tolerant.
I have hope that will win the future. I’ll leave you with another quote from Obama’s wonderful speech:
Two very different visions of humanity’s future compete for the hearts and the minds of citizens around the world,” Obama said. Invoking Mandela’s tribal name, he added, “How should we respond? Should we see that wave of hope that we felt with Madiba’s release from prison, from the Berlin Wall coming down? [Or] should we see that hope that we have as naive and misguided?
Yes we can!
