This time next week Casa Brillig will be in New Orleans, finishing up several days of VERY much-needed vacation and switching into Netroots Nation volunteer mode. Mr. Brillig and I have been to every Netroots Nation, way back to when it was YearlyKos. For those wondering, that means that for the past 13 summers we’ve been to such LOVELY summer venues as Vegas - Chicago - Austin -Pittsburgh - Vegas (never again!) - Minneapolis - Providence - San Jose (when K1 began attending) - Detroit - Phoenix - St. Louis (K2’s first!) - Atlanta - and now New Orleans. It’s where we get energized, see our activist family, and relax in the company of smart (brilliant, actually, do you all KNOW how smart y’all are?!) people. I can’t wait, and I hope I’ll either see some of you there, or be in touch via social media and diaries here.
Grab a glass of something and let’s take a look at some of the amazing folks that hail from the incredible musical hotbed that is Louisiana, after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
There are so many musical styles tracing their roots to New Orleans and Louisiana. Zydeco. Jazz. Second Line. Funk. New Orleans Rhythm & Blues. And the list goes on. I’ve assembled just a few of the musicians hailing from or epitomizing the music I hope to hear while we’re melting in the heat and humidity (or freezing in the conference center because that’s how things always go, y’know?). Please add your own favorites in the comments!
- Mardi Gras In New Orleans — Harry Connick Jr — Fun fact via wikipedia: Connick is a founder of the music-based Krewe of Orpheus.
- Walking To New Orleans — Buckwheat Zydeco — I don’t know nearly enough about zydeco as I want to, but I know that Stanley Joseph Dural Jr and his band epitomize it.
- The Fat Man — Fats Domino — This 1949 song is widely considered the first rock-n-roll record to sell one million copies.
- Lollipop — Lil Wayne — It’s not all jazz and zydeco in New Orleans! Hip Hop has had a place there for a long time. Yes, it’s painfully clear this is NOT my musical genre of choice, but we’re a big tent here.
As you listen to these offerings and add your own in the comments, please peruse the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures, brought to you by one of the people I am excited to see in person next week, BeninSC!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

In her diary America is under attack: Feds say Russia successfully hacked into the U.S. electrical grid, Jen Hayden asks the question, “How long could you and your family last without power in the modern world?” In this comment, ksmoore steps up with the answer of the day.

I appreciated this thoughtful comment response by Franks Human to nontradgrad’s diary of dismay at the lost of a friendship to unexpected wingnuttery.
And please close your eyes before reading this comment from ZenTrainer! (Yes, I said that! 😉 ) In belinda ridgewood’s very fine KTK diary!

Highlighted by TomP:
Is this comment by Davey1107 on the powerful pro-education approach of Ocasio-Cortez, in TomP’s diary about her refusal to take crap from a sexist Republican representative.
And! Also this comment, by AaronMc, on some of the transgressions our country committed earlier in its development, and the engine for strength it developed afterward, which has been undermined so effectively by conservatives in recent decades. Same diary!

Is this comment by SeaStrike on one of the more subtle and insidious objectives of some RW organizations. (And it certainly doesn’t flatter those who so mindlessly swallow their spew.
