In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books. CK 1105am
Permanent reading list:
The Complete Essays by Michel de Montaigne- II.10- On books.- Still trying to get back to this.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle- Taking a breather from Holmes before I start The Hound of the Baskervilles.
I am reading:
The Three Evangelists by Fred Vargas- Again, I misplaced my copy of An Uncertain Place, one of the few books I now have a physical copy of. I also have a physical copy of Vargas’ The Three Evangelists, so I’ll start this and get a copy of the other book for my Kindle if I do not find my physical copy. ‘Cause I really need to read for sheer enjoyment of reading a good murder mystery.
Cosmopolitianism: Ethics in a World of Strangers by Kwame Anthony Appiah- A philosophical and, in some ways, an anthropological study of what cosmopolitianism means and what it means to be a cosmopolite in today’s world polis. Rather deep into the second chapter which deals with anthropology and the distinction (primarily Hume’s) between beliefs and desires (which seems to be a very important distincton to understand in the context of the Trump era...this is a concept that I think I want to dig into a bit). Fascinating analysis here on Sir Francis Richard Burton.
Each person you know about and can affect is someone to whom you have responsibilities: to say this is to affirm the very idea of morality. The challenge, then, is to take minds and hearts formed over the long millennia of living in local troops and equip them with ideas and institutions that will allow us to live together as the global tribe we have become.
