Campaign Action
While Donald Trump is spending his treasured "executive time" sending panicked tweets skewering the Russia probe and lamenting to friends that his eldest son may be in serious legal jeopardy, Don Jr. isn't having any of it. He's off on a lark, visiting GOP strongholds across the country, spreading his special brand of ignorance, and relishing the attention of Trump's staunchest supporters.
Never mind that he's clearly a primary focus of an ongoing investigation headed by the FBI and the Justice Department. In fact, that's probably part of the appeal that's brought him out to stump in Florida, Kansas, Montana, and West Virginia in recent months, with upcoming visits planned for Indiana, Missouri, and North Dakota. The AP writes:
“He’s one of the top draws, if not the top draw for people not named President Trump,” says Jason Miller, a top aide to the 2016 Trump campaign. [...]
And the Mueller investigation?
“I never see anybody at any of these events, nobody even brings it up,” Miller said. “The base loves him because he’s a true believer.”
Of course they don't bring it up. It's the Trump bubble—the fact-free zone where beliefs trump all and conspiracy theories flourish. As former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg notes, the investigation actually works to Don Jr.’s advantage: "He’s being persecuted."
Also, Don Jr.'s got Trump on his side, brushing off Jr.'s epic Trump Tower meeting with tweets like, “This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!”
What's to worry about?
