There will a #KremlinAnnex hiatus tomorrow considering the intersection of many events. OTOH Trump could return to a smell of tear gas.
#KremlinAnnex protest will take the day off on Sunday.
But there's a separate diversity rally at Freedom Plaza on Sunday, then a march to Lafayette Square to counter protest the Nazis.
Here’s hoping that the #OccupyLafayettePark protest this weekend is peaceful. There will be Resisting in the counter-protests to the Unite The Right 2 demonstration. I may try to cover the livestreams tomorrow, if only to watch David Duke pimp the latest Spike Lee joint.
There are a number of counter-protests scheduled on Sunday (see a full list here). A coalition of about 40 groups, called Shut It Down D.C., are planning to hold a counter-protest starting at noon on Sunday at Freedom Plaza. The group is scheduled to march at 3:30 p.m. to Lafayette Square, where white nationalists will be gathering. As of Wednesday, more than 900 people said they were attending on Facebook.
There will also be a Black Lives Matter DC counter-protest just north of the Square.
When and where will this rally be?
According to an email to rally attendees from Kessler, demonstrators will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Vienna Metro station to head into Foggy Bottom via buses and trains. From there, they’ll march down Pennsylvania Ave. to Lafayette Square where they’ll hold a demonstration from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Why now, and why D.C.?
“Unite the Right 2” is being held on the one year anniversary of a rally in Charlottesville which turned deadly. A counter-protester, Heather Heyer, was killed after a car drove into a crowd, and two Virginia State Police officers died after their helicopter crashed after monitoring the event.
Jason Kessler, organizer of “Unite the Right 2,” decided to only focus on a planned D.C. rally after Charlottesville denied his permit application for a second march in December. Kessler’s permit application notes the purpose of this year’s event is to protest “civil rights abuse in Charlottesville/white civil rights rally.”
Who is expected to be there?
It’s unclear exactly how many people will actually attend the rally, but event organizer Jason Kessler indicated in his permit application to the National Park Service that he estimates up to 400 people. Some white nationalists, including the founder of the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, said they will not attend the event because they think it will detract from their overall goals.
According to email correspondence released by the National Park Service through the Freedom of Information Act, there are several white supremacists expected to speak at the event — that includes David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

The performance was part of a series of daily demonstrations that have taken place in front of the White House since President Trump’s meeting in Helsinki, Finland, with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. Monday was the 22nd night of the protests, which have been named the Kremlin Annex.
The cast members — who hailed from current and past runs of “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” “Hamilton,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and other shows — belted out songs meant to evoke a political edge or offer a tinge of hope for the hundreds of protesters who are disillusioned by Mr. Trump (who was in New Jersey during the performance). With demonstrators often singing along, the five-song set included climactic Broadway tunes such as “Do You Hear the People Sing?” from “Les Misérables” and “Everybody Rejoice/A Brand New Day” from “The Wiz.”
Ms. O’Donnell, who has been an adversary of Mr. Trump’s for more than a decade, organized the trip with James Wesley, the producer of Sirius XM’s “On Broadway,” and the show’s host, Seth Rudetsky, a fixture of the Broadway scene.
Closing out the night’s performance, Mr. Rudetsky introduced the final song: “The lyrics going into the actual singalong don’t quite make a lot of sense, but there’s one lyric that makes a lot of sense, which we’re going to focus on.”
The ensemble then began to sing “Let the Sunshine In,” the finale of the 1968 musical “Hair,” as they marched back to the bus to New York.
