Former President Barack Obama is campaigning in Ohio for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray today, weighing in in a key battleground state race. Cordray, the former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and a former state attorney general and state treasurer, is facing off against current state Attorney General Mike DeWine. Obama’s campaign visit follows appearances by Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, and former Vice President Joe Biden is also actively supporting Cordray.
Why so much support for Cordray? Ohio, as anyone who follows presidential politics knows, is an important state. But it’s not just presidential politics. Republicans have controlled the state in recent years, allowing them a firm grip on redistricting. The governor elected in 2018 can affect the next round of redistricting, which makes this a key race—and on top of that, Cordray is a great candidate who spent his years at the CFPB helping millions of people recover money they were cheated out of by big banks, shady lenders, and more.
