The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico has no qualms about letting the world know what she thinks of Donald Trump's new claim that estimated Puerto Rico deaths from Hurricane Maria are a hoax. And she ain't wrong.
San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz responded: "Simply put: delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality."
"Trump is so vain he thinks this is about him. NO IT IS NOT," Cruz wrote on Twitter.
Could any past president have gotten away with such an obviously insane statement without immediate efforts to impeach him? And what will his next claim be? By this time next week, will he claim that Puerto Rico does not really exist?
The contempt Trump has for the office, for reality itself, and for every American subjected to his voice seems to be unbounded. He might only be lying about U.S. deaths to prop up his own ego, but the odds are better that he truly, genuinely believes that reality itself conforms to his whims. Neither is better than the other.
