As radical as it may appear, there IS a case for NOT impeaching Donald Trump. Simply: Mike Pence. If Democrats can win Congress, either the House or the Senate, or even, both! we still will have Mike Pence succeed him as President. And if you can’t understand why this is a problem, just look at hIstory for the reason why: Pence will most certainly pardon Trump “for the good of the nation”. But I would argue that for the good of the nation, Trump MUST be held accountable for his actions, crimes and misdemeanors, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Letting Pence pardon Trump circumvents all of that.
Instead, let’s win the House (and Senate!) and then keep Trump in office, but do what the Republican Congress has not done: Do their job of oversight. Investigate everything that needs scrutiny: Conspiracy with Russia to influence the 2016 election; Trump’s serial sexual assaults; his tax returns; his shady business and phony charitable activities; his conspiracies to hide his affairs with Daniels/Clifford and MacDougal (and the illegal campaign payments involved) made on the eve of the election; and all the other things that need addressing. This will put him and his cohorts in jail for years — a suitable method of reminding them and future transgressors that no one is above the law. It will probably take at least two years to get most of the pertinent facts out, and House and Senate majorities may even be able to stymie Trump’a presidency enough so that he can’t do anything dangerous to the nation.
With enough votes to over-ride Trump vetos, (admittedly, a hard task to accomplish without secure majorities in the House and Senate,) Congress can actually legislate, and pass laws that actually help the majority of Americans, and reverse the actions passed that help mostly rich corporations. Maybe remaining Republicans will get with the program if they want to retain their seats. It will demonstrate that Democrats CAN legislate, CAN act as an equal branch of government to the Presidency and the SCOTUS, and show that they are worthy of continued control of Congress. And I believe we can be sure of this: As long as Trump remains in the White House, but can be contained by Democrats in Congress: Trump’s continued rantings will only diminish his standing with Republicans, encourage more people to vote for Progressives, and encourage a Democratic presidency and Congress in 2020. Also: Trump is unlikely to resign (so Pence can pardon him): He’s unwilling to admit error in any circumstance, so he’ll stay in office out of spite. That’s fine, just so long as justice is done and he and his ilk are consigned to jail and history’s dustbin.
