NY-SD-53 (D): This is the only IDC race without an AP call, but progressive challenger Rachel May is leading state Sen. David Valesky 52-48 with 100% of precincts reporting. Assuming those numbers are accurate, that means six of eight IDC members will have lost tonight—a total bloodbath for GOP enablers, and fantastic news for progressives.
However, even though Republicans only hold 31 seats in the Senate and Democrats hold 32, one conservative Democrat, Simcha Felder, caucuses with the GOP and has shown no inclination to come back to the fold. That means Democrats will have to pick up at least one Republican-held seat this fall, and hopefully more, just in case the two remaining members of the IDC, Diane Savino and David Carlucci, get any ideas about going renegade again.
With that, we’re closing out our liveblog and closing out primary liveblog season! Yep, this was the last primary of the year. We’ll see you again on Nov. 6—Election Day!
