Hurricane Florence has come ashore near Wilmington, NC, with winds of 90 miles an hour. It will then meander through the Carolinas over the weekend, dropping some catastrophic rains in some places.
The hurricane encountered shear from an upper level system on Wednesday and Thursday, which disrupted its circulation and weakened it. But if anyone let their guard down because the winds came down, well that was really stupid.
The hurricane will drop copious amounts of rain as it slowly crawls through the Carolinas. Water is what kills in these storms, either from storm surge or from rain inland. It’s rarely the wind.
It cannot be emphasized enough that the most serious hazardassociated with slow-moving Florence is extremely heavy rainfall, which will cause disastrous flooding that will be spreading inlandthrough the weekend.
We’re not done with this yet.
