Let the FBI do interviews. That’s what Sen. Feinstein set out to have happen. If Kavanaugh doesn’t want to reiterate his blanket denial to the FBI or in testimony under oath, he can withdraw.
Dr. Ford’s story broke via the Washington Post:
Committee member Sen. Flake, "If they push forward without any attempt with hearing what she's had to say, I'm not comfortable voting yes ... we need to hear from her. And I don't think I'm alone in this." This stalls the vote — one Republican senator is all it takes to put a halt to the committee voting as scheduled.
Sen. Bob Corker, "I think that would be best for all involved, including the nominee. If she does want to be heard, she should do so promptly."
The situation has clearly changed, but Republicans are likely to try to push the nomination vote anyway and somehow minimize what has transpired. Maybe a phone call can take care of a rape accusation?
The rapid rush to push Kavanaugh was made by Republicans aware of the accusation and the letter in the expectation the letter would not become public. It is only now that the letter and writer are public and Dr. Ford has spoken out that they are reacting. Until it was public, they couldn’t move fast enough on confirmation. They even paraded Kavanaugh’s daughters at the hearing.
How will the Republicans defend Kavanaugh now, and also importantly, how will they justify their support for him while the accusation was their closely held secret?
Sen. Franken wasn’t accused of attempted rape, but a Republican chorus unanimously called for his resignation based on accusations.
Party over principle, right? Sen. Schumer has demanded Senate postpone the Kavanaugh vote. Sen. Feinstein is urging the FBI to probe the Kavanaugh allegations.
NARAL— EVERY. SINGLE. SENATOR. should be calling for the withdrawal of Brett Kavanaugh. Period. #StopKavanaugh
And, of course, the trolls are already attacking Dr. Ford and the Democrats because this information is now public.
