Today I will travel to Prairie View A&M University for a forum sponsored by the student government and multiple campus organizations. I am honored to have an opportunity to engage with voters at this most historic public institution.
Prairie View A&M is a 140 year-old historically-black university that has been at the center of some of the most important struggles for civil rights in Texas. Understanding the importance of this campus community to our district, we have hired two student organizers to support voter registration and outreach on campus.
Donate today to register voters and boost student engagement at Prairie View A&M.
Repeatedly, throughout the last forty years, Prairie View students have been forced to fight for their right to vote. Public officials have suppressed the vote by declaring that students are not "residents" and thus cannot register, closing early voting locations on campus, and even by preventing the U.S. Postal Service from delivering mail on campus, thus creating another barrier to student voter registration. In response, students have resisted in powerful fashion, marching 1000s strong to the polls and filing successful lawsuits that established voting rights for college students across the country.
We know that outreach to young voters is critical to the success of my campaign, and to every campaign up and down the ballot. Not only are we fighting to win control of Congress in 2019, but we are working to strengthen democratic participation for years to come.
Please donate today so that we can continue this essential work.
If you are in the area tomorrow, please come to our event on campus. And either way, thank you for your continued participation and support.
With respect,
Mike Siegel
