I find it interesting how word managed to leak out (then again, every single issue involving this administration involved leaks, often I suspect, ordered or organizd by trump himself) that McConnell warned the White House against nominating Kavanaugh. Once he could not convince Trump to choose someone else, with a less tattered, and murky history, he did a yowman’s job in hiding evidence, speeding up the process, and throwing sand into the Democrats’ eyes.
Now, he faces a dire dilemma, one he fully grasps.
If he loses the Kavanaugh vote, the wild, rabid, frothing at the mouth, knuckle-dragging, auto-lobotomized, conservo-christianist, teabuggered crowd will react and react badly. But, the chance of those maniacs switching parties, while Joe Biden and Hilary Clinton make noises about running again, is about as likely as Satan opening up ski areas in Hell. He is pretty sure that they will come back to the fold. After all, we are dealing with attention spans the size of a gnat, in most cases, and memories that resemble a Pet Rock. They will come back to Mitch, even if they are pissed at the loss.
The real problem is if he wins and Kavanaugh is confirmed.
McConnell has admitted that the senate is in play in November. He would never admit anything close to that unless his internal numbers were raising alarms, red flags, and fireworks. On this, I think we can trust him at his word (I cannot believe I just said that). When a huge fact is staring you in the face, unless your name is Trump, a seasoned pol like McConnell would not risk even more stains and embarrassment by denying the obvious.
If Kavanaugh succeeds, McConnell can kiss goodbye the senate, the house, and most likely the presidency in 2020. He knows it, he feels it, he understands just how angry most of America will become at that travesty.
I am sure that is a big part of their pow-wows they are holding in DC. I would suspect, but have absolutely no proof, that some of his minions are looking out for witlesses, then when the coast is clear, they whisper strong suggestions to Kavanaugh. Like “Withdraw, dude.”
I have no doubts that he Kavanugh be rewarded, if he withdraws, with income high enough to cover his serious gambling debts and other financial problems, probably with his hiring bonus check.
Either way, McConnell grasps that this is a lose-lose situation, and frankly, it could not happen to a more deserving dude.
