Welcome to the Thursday edition of the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, an open thread conveniently located at the intersection of Religion and Politics. I have been reading a lot of mysteries lately. They help relief the stress I’m under 24/7.
I love to read. In fact I read a lot more then I watch television. Most evenings I’ll sit on the bed and read for a couple of hours before I go to bed. Pixie loves to cuddle up next to me as I read.
Some of the mysteries I love are Elizabeth Peter’s Amelia Peabody turn of the century Egyptology mysteries. They are a fun read and I enjoy her feisty heroine. I recently finished rereading all of the Sherlock Holmes. Other favorite mystery writers are Rhys Bowen especially her Lady Georgie mysteries, M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin, P.D. James’s Adam Dalgleish, Robert Van Gulik’s Judge Dee, Dorothy Gillman’s Mrs. Polifax, Caroline Hart's Death on Demand series, and the reissue of Carol Nelson Douglas’s Irene Adler series. I have read a lot of Agatha Christie. As far as the cooking mysteries go I have read most of Dianne Mott Davidson’s Goldie Shultz mysteries. I enjoy Simon Brett and have read most of his three series with Charles Paris, Mrs. Pargetter and Carole and Jude. I’ve read all of Lillian Jackson Braun’s Cat Who books. I’ve read a lot of Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown’s cat mysteries. I love Emily Brightwell’s Mrs. Jeffries mysteries. I’ve also read a lot of Andrew Greeley. I’ve read a lot of Anne Perry’s Victorian mysteries.
My reading goes between mysteries and science fiction/fantasy. When I read at night I do so mainly for relaxation. My batting average at guessing, “who done it” is horrendous. I rarely if ever guess right. Have you read any good books lately? What mystery writers do you like to read?
