National problems are outside of my personal control.
Local problems are more, though not entirely, within my control.
I have to focus on what I can control, not on whirlwinds that are larger than me.
To that end, I encourage all to contact your local precinct and county Dem leaders.
The name of the game is
VOTER CONTACT!!!
Especially at this point, so close to the election, help is needed locally with:
Phone banks,
Canvassing,
Hustle texting (sounds like phone sex, but no, it’s not at all),
Office support, and
Poll Greeting.
These last 4 weeks of potential Voter Contacts are crucial.
These Final Voter Contacts to typical presidential-year-voters, but not always midterm-year-voters, can increase turn out among that group by 14%. No joke(r).
If you have one evening a week, one weekend morning, please call you local county Democratic HQ and ask how you can help. Or see if you can sign-up online.
You know what phone banking, canvassing, and postcard writing are, I’m sure.
What is Hustle texting?
Many counties now have lots of cell phone numbers of Dem voters & past volunteers.
If your county has a Meet the Candidate event or Early Voting, then short, simple texts are a great way to let your voters know that the Candidate Meet & Greet is tomorrow at the park or that Early Voting has just started at 4 sites in the county.
Humans are the engine, combined with the Hustle software, to text a message to X number of individuals in a morning, so that each appears to be getting a personal invitation. When short & not over used, this is very effective right now.
Perfect for shy introverts with a smart phone who like to work quietly in teams.
Ask your county leaders if they use this program. It’s not free for the county party to use, but it does work.
Poll Greeting is one of my favorites.
Every 2 years, I take off work for election day to be a Poll Greeter in my precinct.
Our county’s Dem voters have learned to expect a table staffed with happy knowledgeable people armed with voter guides, sample ballots with Dem candidates filled in, and amendment or resolutions guides.
Voter guides and filled in sample ballots help infrequent voters feel more Confident and Competent. This help build a positive voting experience which encourages these voters to come back again in 2 years.
That is one of our longer term goals, creating a well of every-2-yr voters!
Hurrah!
Now for the fun and games portion of the diary—
www.checkiday.com/…
Did you know that today is —
“Hug a Drummer Day is day to celebrate drummers, a group of percussionists who keep the rhythm and beat of music, but are usually the least celebrated musicians in a band, and are often neglected.
The day was created to bring a little appreciation and
exposure to drummers. It was started in 2013 by Glen and others from Drumming.Co, and is supported by various drum companies.”
How to Observe- Self evident.
“International Top Spinning Day was founded in 2003 by the Spinning Top and Yo-Yo Museum in Burlington, Wisconsin. According to Judith Schulz, director of the museum, ‘The earth spins around a single axis, just as toy spinning tops and yo-yo's do.’ The day is meant to recognize and celebrate this scientific fact. An annual event is held at the museum, but on this day people spin tops all around the world.” AGAIN, you know what to do.
National Love Your Hair Day. #LoveIsInTheHair.
I did not invent this day, but wish I did.
“National Love Your Hair Day is being observed today! It has been observed annually on October 10th since 2017.”
Okay, not the longest observed holiday, but as a curly-haired person who is sick and tired of “make-over” shows pulling a curly-haired person out of the audience and turning them into a straight-haired person by the end of the show, I say we let the curls fall where they may.
I will be in, and, mostly, out today with work, but hope that all enjoy!
