As a Pediatrician for almost 20 years in Florida’s 1st Congressional District, I have cared for hundreds of families and have been the voice of reason. As Hurricane Michael approached, I found myself going into “Mother of the District” mode to help people prepare for the threat to the Panhandle. I made a Facebook video of my hurricane preparedness kit, encouraged people to evacuate if necessary, and sent heartfelt well wishes to my fellow Floridians. Before I could even confirm what the damage entailed, I found myself asking my supporters for donations, not knowing how they would get to those affected, but knowing my passion would find a way. I have been told that this is what leadership looks like, and what a great person I am, yet all I could hear were the words of my late father: “You never lose by giving to others.” This is who I am, a giver, a caretaker, a cheerleader for hope. I stayed here with the constituents of District 1 through Ivan. I took care of you all at Santa Rosa Medical Center before I even knew if my own house would still be there to welcome me and my family home. Maybe Matt had his reasons for leaving Orlando, FL after campaigning with Ron DeSantis to go back to D.C. Maybe this mama and good doctor who has been taking care of you for two decades is too stubborn to escape at the slightest hint of trouble. Maybe his definition of leadership looks different than mine. Let’s just leave it at this: he has his priorities, and I have mine. Let your vote reflect the priorities you want your representative to have in District 1. I believe that the choice is clear this November 6th.
