Donald Trump has suffered some blows this week to his claim that everything is fine and dandy with the economy, and all because of him, of course. But while unemployment began its steady decline during the Obama years as did the stock market's climb, one thing Trump is uniquely responsible for is the tariffs he started slapping on America's trading partners.
Those tariffs are costing American businesses and consumers $1.4 billion per month according to a coalition of more than 100 business groups, and they want voters to know it, reports Reuters. The group, called Tariffs in the Heartland, did state break down of the numbers and found tariff costs tripled in Michigan, for instance, while doubling in states like Illinois, Texas, and Virginia.
The group is taking its statistics on the road in a number of town hall forums running straight through heartland states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee. In Pennsylvania, for instance, they plan to reveal data proving Trump's tariffs cost state businesses $45 million more this August compared to a year ago. The coalition will also be unveiling a digital ad going after the Trump administration for attempting to trivialize the effect of the tariffs.
