A fair number of you know that I read New Age books and such for the entertainment value, and the occasional piece of good advice. I don’t recall mentioning where many would see it that several years back, I took up reading annual predictions — not for me personally, for the world situation. For 2017, I kept running across the idea that if we made it through the fall equinox/September, everything would work out fine — it wouldn’t necessarily be quick and it definitely wouldn’t be pleasant, but things would end well. Well, we made it past September of 2017, and it’s definitely not pleasant (and doesn’t look to improve very much very soon); but when time for 2018 predictions rolled around, I kept finding words to the effect that this would be the year when enough people finally decide that “I’ve got mine, fuck you” is no way to live. I don’t know about the rest of you, but it certainly looks like that’s what’s happening to me — we may have hit the tipping point for the US.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Spelling quiz. I missed one, and I guarantee I will never misspell “cemetery” again. Don’t shoot me — I got hooked on the weirdities of the English language when I was nine, and I’m 65 now.
I can argue with this one. Most doctors either don’t know or don’t think to tell their patients that if you want the Vitamin D to go where it needs to be, you have to take Vitamin K with it. And besides, Vitamin D is good for a lot more than bone strength.
Archaeological data can help cope with climate change.
Well, this is fairly recent history, but somebody might be getting close to lost British documents from around the time of the Munich Pact. Odds are they’re misfiled somewhere; but still ….
Gallinippers after Hurricane Florence. I wonder if Michael has killed some of them.
The inhabitants of Easter Island appear to have got their water from groundwater runoff at the shoreline.
A robot is going to testify before the UK Parliament.
I hope the people in Herculaneum died quickly — it can’t have been pleasant. And, no, they didn’t die the same way the people of Pompei did.

Eye appointment last Tuesday. My prescription hasn’t appreciably changed in the last 18 years. My reading glasses (I’m wearing a pair as I write this) and bifocals were done in 2004, and there was no period of adjustment as far as the vision acuity went (getting used to walking around wearing the bifocals, though …). And the only reason my distance vision lenses are newer is that the old ones got hopelessly scratched up over the course of about 12 years. And I have an appointment in April for the more medical procedures that my ophthalmologist wants done routinely.
Remind me that I can’t eat brioche. I had heartburn on Wednesday and Thursday, and that’s the only thing I can think of that could have provoked it.

I spent one day last week upgrading some of my programs — and was therefore offline for most of the day. I can’t claim symptoms of withdrawal, but it was a fairly unsettled day since I couldn’t do over half of the things I routinely do. Even I can’t read for better than eight hours at a time — in spite of a lot of people’s efforts to convince everybody (including me) otherwise, I never could.
