If you live in Louisiana, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon, or West Virginia and you want to vote on November 6, act now. Today, October 16, is your deadline to register for this election. Other states have registration deadlines coming up quickly, while many states’ deadlines have already passed.
Coming up this week, so if you can’t do it right this minute, make your plans: Massachusetts and South Carolina have deadlines tomorrow, October 17. Nevada’s deadline is Thursday, October 18.
Not too far off: Alabama and South Dakota have an October 22 deadline. Nebraska’s is October 26. Washington State’s is October 29.
In 15 states and the District of Columbia you can register to vote on Election Day. That includes California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Note that in some of these states you can register in person between now and Election Day, while in others there’s an earlier deadline and then registration re-opens on Election Day. In North Dakota, you don’t need to register, just bring ID (though that is a contentious issue this year).
If you’re not registered and it’s not too late in your state, register now. Tell your family and friends. Hold their hands and walk them through it if you need to. And once you’ve taken care of the registration part …
