Now this has got to bite.
You WILL want to read this op ed in the Reno Gazette Journal which totally savages Adam Laxalt in his run for Governor.
Here are the names of the people who signed it:
Gabriel Urza, Kevin Nomura, Amy Nomura Solaro, Alexandra Urza, Kevan Danielle Laxalt, Michelle Terese Laxalt, Peter Laxalt, Michelle Janet Laxalt, Dr. Kevin Marie Laxalt, Dr. Kristin Laxalt, Monique Laxalt and Meggan Laxalt Mackey
And why did they write it? Let me offer the first paragraph:
The decision to write this column has not been an easy one for us. We are writing as members of the Laxalt family who have spent our lives in Nevada, and feel compelled to protect our family name from being leveraged and exploited by Adam Laxalt, the Republican candidate for governor.
and the 3rd and 4th:
There are many specific, well-documented reasons why we believe this to be the case.
First, for those of us who were actually raised in Nevada, it’s difficult to hear him continue to falsely claim that he was raised in Nevada or has any true connections to Nevadans. The simple fact is that while he may have been born in Reno, he left as an infant and was raised on the East Coast, 3,000 miles away, in Washington, D.C., and moved here only in 2013, only one year later launching his political career. Aside from the occasional short visit, Adam never knew the state or its people. Perhaps if he had, he would stand for Nevada’s values rather than for those of his out-of-state donors.
There is more to this, including their criticizing him for
- being opposed to immigrants when they themselves are descendants from an immigrant family (the Laxalts are Basque in origin)
- having undermined very popular 2-term Republican Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval (who btw so far has NOT endorse Laxalt and has criticized some of his campaign rhetoric).
Reno was the base of Paul Laxalt, close friend of Ronald Reagan, Governor of and Senator from Nevada, who also served as chair of the Republican National Committee. This is the paper for Washoe County, the 2nd largest (after Clark, which includes Las Vegas), which has a slight Republican edge in registration, and is in some ways considered the bellweather county — if Dems carry it, usually they win statewide.
Methinks this is a good sign, along with what we are seeing in early voting (which continues to be very strong in Democratic Clark County), for Democrats up and down the ballot — Governor, Senator, and perhaps a House seat?
Read the op ed and enjoy.
