There's method to the madness of fearmongering and anti-Semitism on full display from Donald Trump (also, too, in his case maybe some actual madness) and his fellow Republicans.
They need to keep the low-information kind of voter who has voted with Democrats in the past but switched to Trump. They need to do it by keeping them afraid. They need to keep them distracted by things like the totally-not-really-invading horde that's in the caravan hundreds of miles away from the southern border. They need to do it by making them think that there's some secretive evil (Jewish, in whispers) villain bankrolling the whole process along with the Democrats. They need to distract the rest of us by fighting over all these things, including the latest ridiculous diversion from Trump about doing away with birthright citizenship.
They're throwing absolutely everything at the wall so voters, and particularly older voters who they think scare easily, don't notice that they're really trying to take away not just our health care, but Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid. This excellent ad from Priorities USA lays it out. "The Republicans just admitted it," says the ad, titled "Big Cuts." It shows Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying that "Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid" are his targets. "They’re going to make you pay for their massive tax giveaway to big corporations and the wealthy. AFTER the election." They're putting $2 million into the ad, running it nationally through Election Day.
Is this just more fearmongering? Nope. It's a warning of the very real threat Republicans pose to our way of life. It's far more frightening than the mothers and children trying to escape violence in Central America slowly walking toward the border.
