So, in the past two weeks we have had four sets of visitors from the Antonio Delgado campaign (NY-19): Two mature women, two college student, a middle-aged couple and two middle-aged women. They have come looking for my wife and my son. They missed them each time but one.
I was pleased to tell them that they had three votes (plus two monetary contributions) in our house.
The volunteers were all articulate, well-dressed, friendly and polite. They were not pushy or overly aggressive.
On the last visit I knew this campaign was well-run. I asked why they never came to the door looking for me. The women said, “Because you vote in every democratic primary and every election.” That was the right answer.
Though counter-intuitive to many first time campaigners, reaching out to party members that vote in every primary and every general election is a waste of time. Those people, like me, vote. They wanted to speak to my wife, who votes in every general but has missed some primaries. My son is a first-time voter. They are hitting the right notes to take down GOP Congressmen Faso.
Faso is exactly the type of politician that can go down in a wave election, or even less than a wave. He is first-termer, his party is in the White House, he is not likeable and the opposition has a good candidate and they are energized and working their asses off.
Sound like another race? A race in Texas?
Five Thirty Eight gives Delgado a 5 in 8 chance to take this.
Right now, Five Thirty Eight gives O’Rourke a 22% chance to win. Doesn’t sound too good but if someone told me I had a 22% chance to win the lottery you bet your ass I’d be buying tickets.
