World War I, the Great War, the War to End All War, officially ended. We are still dealing with the repercussions.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Well, the Pakistani woman acquitted of blasphemy is safe so far. She and her family are going to be able to get out of Pakistan, but where will they go after that?
New evidence that Nez Perce grew and used tobacco about 1200 years ago.
Here, apparently, is why spider silk is so strong.
The original wooden palisade surrounding Quebec City has been found. It was lost track of after the stone walls were built.
Durian stunk up a plane and caused a flight delay. My question is, why wasn’t this shipment packed properly?
For a long time, archaeologists asserted that the ancient Maya were strictly inland people. They are finding out different.
There seems to be a new explanation of how the moon formed. Fascinating.
Vegetables last eaten routinely well over a hundred years ago are making a comeback. The article is trying to be cute about it.
One of the hazards of cheap airfare.

The Treaty of Versailles, which was signed to end the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers was regarded by Germany as excessively punitive. Article 231, also called the War Guilt Clause called for Germany to pay a much larger amount in reparations than their post-war economy could actually support. That they tried at all is part of the reason the Nazis came to power.
This is definitely the Reader’s Digest version of what I know about the end of WWI. And as I write this, 100 years ago, they were still fighting.
It is well known among historians of the period that General Haig, who was in overall charge of British strategy, rewrote his diaries to make himself look less of an idiot than he was. There is a great deal of truth to the old wheeze about the men in charge are always fighting the previous war.
I am not trying to go into great detail here. I have a fascination with WWI, and I have been reading about it again; but I have never been a professional historian, and this is about the sum of what I want to say.

Well the election results are mostly in. I hope the recounts that will happen in the South humiliate the people who need to be.
Among the reasons the House will smell better come January is that Dana Rohrabacher lost.
Is anybody surprised that Jeff Sessions has been forced out? And Trump doesn’t know the guy he just appointed to Acting Attorney General??!!!

I have been napping. In fact, when my daughter called me on Friday to say her ex had been offered a shift that would let him go home before 3 AM, and could I pick the kids up from their after-school activities, she woke me up. This is a pretty sure sign that I am ill.
Don’t know what bug I have since I am achy and tired, but have no other symptoms that would give me a clue.

When I’m poking around the web, I keep running across the assertion that the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections is a big nothingburger — that Mueller is finding nothing. It was dodging taxes that brought Al Capone down, and I believe they’re following the money this time, too.
