There is another race in Georgia that we may actually be able to win! John Barrow needs some support in his run off attempt for Secretary of State!

This race may be even more important than the governorship. John Barrow, many generation Georgian, descendant of the founders of Barrow County, Georgia, former US Congressman and actual white southern Democrat and damn proud of it, will face off against yet another corrupt Republican on 12/4 for a position that has the potential to either save our elections or return us to a modern Jim Crow. As Secretary of State, John has the chance to make sure that Georgians of all colors, shapes, sizes and persuasions have a fair chance to vote.
My big blue dot about a mile from Atlanta (I can see Atlanta from my house!) usually votes around 92% blue. John Lewis is my Congressman! My little city is also about 88% white, 90% over educated and 120% overpriced. Yet our polling place, where I have voted for 20 years, had half the number of machines as we usually have. Even in the city commission and school board races last year we had 12 machines. This year, this major midterm year, we had SIX. SIX. For Brian Kemp and Karen “the Ted Cruz of Georgia” Handel before him, the SoS office is a tool not only to violate the Voting Rights Act for minorities but to make it harder for any one who thinks differently from them to exercise the right to vote. Other heavily Democratic, gay and progressive areas were reporting the same lack of machines on social media. Let’s not even talk about what they did in lower income and minority areas. It was more obvious and even worse.
I worked with John Barrow not long ago. He was a Blue Dog in Congress for sure, but he is a good man and he, like other good men and good lawyers, has been evolving his positions on a lot for a long time. I know that John will be the first line of defense for disenfranchised minority voters — who are the ones really suffering the fall out of the voter roll purges here. People like me, in nice upper middle class white suburbs, well, they may cut down our number of machines, but we at least get power cords and for some reason they find it harder to purge us. Our Democratic brothers and sisters of color across this state, especially those in less than spiffy zip codes, don’t get the same courtesy.
The governor’s race may not be ours this. But John can win Secretary of State and the next time all Georgians will have assurance that one person one vote will be a reality for all and not just white Republicans.
