Evening, kibitzers. I am not going to be able to join you tonight—the BF and I have a reservation for a couples cooking class at Sur La Table. I’m pretty excited, as a cooking class is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now, and all the better that it’s a couples class. The menu theme is “Romantic Fall Dinner.” I’ll respond to comments as soon as I can, but probably not until late tonight or early tomorrow. In the meantime, this is an open thread as always, so have fun.
I thought I would leave you with some food porn, at least. We planned a date night for last night, and we finally went to a restaurant that has been on my to-try list for years. When I first moved to Houston, I befriended a gay couple who showed me around the city in general, but the Montrose neighborhood in particular. I still remember that one of their explicit recommendations in Montrose was Hugo’s, an upscale “modern Mexican” restaurant—that was about eight years ago. It’s a pretty iconic Houston restaurant, and I’m kind of ashamed that it took me eight years to try it. But I spent five of those eight years as a poor grad student, and Hugo’s was never really in my budget. After last night, though, I’m sorry I waited so long.
It was an excellent experience from beginning to end. The service was top-notch, and the dining room itself was lovely:
But the food was just incredible. To be honest, we wanted everything. As we scanned the menu, our eyes turned out to be larger than our stomachs (not an easy feat)—and our wallets. We walked out with a lot of leftovers and spent the car ride home blaming each other for the bill. It was well worth it, though. And we got plenty of food porn:
What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
