Please, FFS, stop saying “perjury trap” if you don’t know what it means. It feeds into a BS Trumpian meme, and it’s Just! Plain! Wrong!
A perjury trap occurs when a question WHICH IS NOT RELEVANT TO THE ISSUE AT HAND is asked, with the knowledge that the person asked will answer with a lie. The goal is to create a charge of perjury, rather than to investigate the crime at hand.
Please allow me to give a couple of examples of what is, and what isn’t, a perjury trap.
In an investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election, and possible collusion with Russia: “Mr. President, were you still involved in negotiations with Russia to put a Trump Tower in Moscow while you were running for President?”
This is not a perjury trap. Why not? Because it goes to the issue at hand, the investigation into collusion with Russia.
How about this one?
In an investigation into a land deal in Arkansas: “Mr. President, did you have sex with an intern?”
This is a perjury trap. Why? Because it does not got to the issue at hand.
Got it?
Good.
Sheesh.
